CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

She had to be a primary teacher, Logan thought. There was no way that this thirty-something woman, with her bright yellow dungarees, fluffy pink socks, and anxious, mousy wee movements would last two minutes in a secondary school. They’d eat her alive.

Possibly literally, depending on the catchment area.

She offered them tea, which they initially declined, until she insisted she was making one for herself, anyway, so it really wasn’t a bother.

The drinks were brought through, one at a time, in colourful pottery containers that appeared to have been homemade, and most likely in something of a hurry. They were approximately mug-sized and, if you used your imagination, vaguely mug-shaped, too.

Each had been glazed a different shade of green, with white and yellow flowers painted inexpertly on the sides.

The handles looked like they’d been stuck on as something of an afterthought, and both detectives supported the mugs from below, assuming that the handles were almost certainly going to fail and fall off before their tea had been drunk.

“You’ve got a lovely flat,” Sinead said, as Charlotte took a seat on the chair across from the narrow couch.

The couch was built for two, but since Logan technically qualified as a one-and-a-half, Sinead’s space was limited, so she couldn’t move much more than her head. She glanced around at the vibrant paint hues and the clumsily upcycled furniture.

“It’s very… lively.”

Charlotte thanked her for the kind words, then shoved her thick-rimmed glasses up onto her head, using them like a headband to hold back her unkempt frizz of red hair. As she did, both detectives’ eyes were drawn to the slightly grubby white bandage on her left hand.

They’d noticed it almost right away—it had been the reason she’d brought the mugs through one at a time—but she’d kept it out of sight as much as possible, like she was ashamed of it, or just afraid that they’d notice.

She saw how their eyes followed the hand now, and quickly lowered it to her side so it was tucked between her and the side of the chair.

“Uh, so… What is it I can do for you?” she asked.

“It’s a bit of an odd one, Miss Wilson,” Logan said. She was definitely a ‘miss,’ he thought, and her lack of reaction didn’t say anything to the contrary. “It’s concerning a discovery that was made yesterday in a house a few miles from here.”

“A discovery?” Charlotte’s gaze danced around the room, not settling on either detective. “What kind of discovery?”

Logan took a sip of his tea, then instantly spat it back into the mug.

“Sorry, it’s Earl Grey, is that alright?”

Of course it bloody wasn’t. Earl Grey tea was an outrage at the best of times. Being subjected to it unexpectedly was, as far as Logan was concerned, up there with some of the more harrowing war crimes.

“That’s fine,” he said, then he set the mug down on a coaster on the table, where it would remain untouched for the remainder of the interview.

“Is this about that young woman who was killed?” Charlotte asked.
